Fixing the Body’s Alarm Clock – Naturally!
Do your days and nights run together?
Do your thoughts carry from the daytime into the restless, turning-into-the-wee-hours of the night? Do you feel that you are not “you” until about 10:00 o’clock in the morning?
If the answer to one or more of these questions is “Yes,” you will likely benefit from one of the oldest remedies for sleep/wake cycle problems. The answer is found in L-tryptophan, an amino acid that has saturated the naturopathic literature for decades because it is safe, simple, cheap and proven effective for sleep/wake cycle problems.
The only problem with L-tryptophan is that it had not been available for over fifteen years because one foreign company called Showa Denko K.K., in an attempt to speed production, royally screwed up the process, which caused an adulterated harmful product to enter the market. People got very sick from this contaminated product. They developed something called Eosinophilic Myalgia Syndrome (EMS), an allergic-type illness directed toward the muscles. Across the board, L-tryptophan was blamed when the culprit was really just the product from one company.
Finally – really, finally, the nutritional industry has overcome the hurdle of getting L-tryptophan back on the market and it is now available again. This is good news because in my opinion, we need it. It is an amino acid. It is a building block and it is involved in our sleep/wake cycle. Taking it at bedtime in reasonable amounts has been found to help with the sleep cycle. When added with other calming nutrients like chamomile, valerian, melatonin, and certain vitamins and minerals, your reasonable expectation to have a reasonable night’s sleep is met. The morning after is not met with what I call the “drags, bags, lags syndrome” but instead the sunshine is appreciated and you might even feel inspired to start your day with a song in stride upon going to work or school.
If this sounds a little too upbeat, so be it. I’m just stating the facts as we know them and I am delighted that we once again have a safe and reliable product that will help us meet this need.
We are not meant to work 24/7 nor are we meant to collapse for 12+ hours in our beds and eventually get up feeling upside down. Let’s do something sensible. Let’s do something now. Let’s start taking L-tryptophan once again with confidence and look forward to a good night’s sleep and a brighter tomorrow.
